What Bangalore employers should know now

The four Labour Codes came into force on 21 November 2025, and final central rules were notified on 8 May 2026.

  • IT and ITeS standing orders: Karnataka exempted IT/ITeS establishments, start-ups and other knowledge-based industries from the Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act, 1946 until June 2029, but the exemption stated that it would be overridden once the Industrial Relations Code came into force. Employers in these sectors should check whether standing orders now apply to them.
  • Shops and establishments: Karnataka has long given IT/ITeS establishments partial relief from limits on operating hours and weekly holidays under the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961, and changes to working-hour limits have been proposed.
  • Wages and exit: one definition of wages across the Codes, with wages payable within two working days of exit.
  • Fixed-term employees: gratuity after one year of service.
  • Restructuring: prior government permission for layoff, retrenchment and closure applies from 300 workers (earlier 100), and standing orders apply from 300 workers.
  • Platform work: Karnataka has its own platform-based gig workers legislation.
